Paramount Fence has a well-established presence, having been a top name in fence installation in Chicagoland for the better part of two decades. Not only that, but we’re locals, working in our family-owned business and living in this community. We know fencing backwards and forwards, but we also know the Midwest better than just about anyone. We understand the materials that will work in the Midwest, and we also know which materials are a poor choice. That’s why, when you work with Paramount Fence, you can be sure that we are only going to use materials that work in the Midwest.

Why Weather-Resistant Fencing is a Must in the Midwest

The people in this part of the country may be largely mild-mannered, but the weather most certainly is not. Prone to extremes, Chicagoland’s weather features blistering heat and high humidity in the summer and then swings to sub-freezing temperatures and heavy snow in the winter. We get high winds and punishing blizzards, and all of that can take a toll on a fence. In the summer, the heat and UV exposure can degrade certain fence materials, causing them to dry, crack, fade, or warp. When the wind rises in the fall, fences can be damaged by loose branches or flying objects. Further, if leaves are allowed to pile around the base of a fence, the fence may begin to degrade. While the spring can be beautiful, there is plenty of rainfall. Fences that are not made to withstand the weather can retain moisture, and this can lead to rot and fungal growth. Of course, winter is the most punishing season for a fence. Snow accumulates on the fence, ice forms, and this can strain certain fence materials or make them brittle. Some fences will warp or crack, others will rust, and if your fence is made from subpar materials, it’s not going to last very long.

Best Midwest Fence Materials

If you buy a fence from a national chain, it could end up being the wrong kind of material for this area, especially if you order online. The salespeople at these chains may not be from this area, and so the recommendations they give you might be better suited for somewhere else. It’s not that the fencing is inherently shoddy; it’s just that the Midwest requires specific fence materials. So, what’s the best fence material for our area? Wooden fences can be appropriate for use in this area, as long as you choose wood that will stand up to moisture and temperature extremes. At Paramount Fence, we install beautiful wood fences in a variety of styles, all made of either western red cedar or pressure-treated pine. Western red cedar is the preferred wood for Midwestern fences, renewable, durable, and long-lasting. Metal fences also stand up to rough weather well, and we install a variety of metal fences, including chain link and ornamental steel fences. PVC/ vinyl fences are our other option, and these cost-effective fences offer privacy and durability.

Privacy Fence Durability Issues

What good is a privacy fence if it’s falling apart? A privacy fence should be made of durable materials like western cedar or PVC, and maintained to lengthen its lifespan. If it’s installed improperly or made of inferior materials, you may begin to notice signs of damage well before you would expect to need to replace your fence. Fortunately, when it’s time to replace your privacy fence, we have a wide array from which to choose, including western red cedar in solid wood, shadowbox, traditional, and spaced picket.

Fence Replacement Signs

How do you know when a fence requires replacement? If there is visible decay or damage, like warping, rot, or holes, it’s time for a new, better fence. You should also consider replacing a fence if its security is compromised by gaps, broken locks, or unstable posts. If your fence frequently needs repair, or even if it looks outdated, it’s worth considering replacement.
