There are plenty of reasons to install a tall fence. People put up tall fences because they want privacy from the neighbors, or because they want to keep intruders out of their property. But have you ever considered a short fence? Short fences can be very appealing and serve a wide variety of purposes. What’s your favorite of these short fence styles?

  • Picket fences are charming and timeless. Choose a short white picket fence around your property for a classic, wholesome look, or a picket fence made of unfinished wood if your style is more rustic. Picket fences come in a variety of heights, and when you put a short one in front of your house, you can still show off your architecture and landscaping without taking away from the view.
  • A split rail fence can give a rustic look to your property. Split rail fences can be made of wood, but there are also PVC/ vinyl split rail fences. They can have two, three, or even four rails, which gives you flexibility on the height.
  • Ornamental fences can be beautiful as short fences. With the look of wrought iron, aluminum and steel ornamental fences raise your curb appeal without breaking your budget. If you’d like a short fence that still adds a layer of security, you can top your fence with pointed ornamentation to discourage people from jumping it.
  • Wood and metal aren’t your only option. A PVC vinyl fence of any height is durable and low-maintenance. What’s more, PVC vinyl fencing comes in a wide variety of styles, from PVC split rail fences to scalloped picket fences, to solid tongue and groove fences.

Why would you need a short fence? Sometimes it’s an aesthetic choice. A short fence around your front yard, for instance, will provide an extra layer of security without overwhelming the look of your home. An intruder will think twice before doing something as obvious as jumping a fence to get to your front door! Then, too, if you’re just fencing in a garden or a small dog, it’s sometimes practical to have a short fence. Contractor help may not be necessary for a short fence around your garden, for example, and you can save the money you’d spend on having your little fence installed and use it to have a large privacy fence put in.
